Tattoo-Related Uveitis on the Rise

Tattoo-Related Uveitis in Atlanta

Eye inflammation or uveitis can be linked to tattoos.  Uveitis experts note an increase in the frequency of uveitis related to tattoos.  Patients present with a range of symptoms including redness, photophobia, change in vision, and/or eye pain.  If not treated these patients are at risk for severe vision complications including cystoid macular edema, pupillary membranes, and uveitic glaucoma.  According to a 2015 Harris poll, 29% of the U.S. population has a tattoo.  With the increasing popularity of tattoos in the general population, the incidence of tattoo-related uveitis may increase.  If anyone with a tattoo has the above eye-related symptoms they are advised to seek the attention of an ophthalmologist for prompt diagnosis and care.
